Good afternoon Knight Families:

Last week we passed a major milestone in our school calendar, the 100 day mark.  You may remember when your student was in elementary school and they celebrated the 100th day of school.  It was a big deal.  In high school, it isn’t quite that big of a story. However, this year it feels big!  It means you have certified your student 100 + times, we have been in person learning 100 + days, we have been socially distanced 100+ days, we have worn masks 100+ days and we have worked through the rules from the health department, state board and the CDC for 100+ days.  Honestly, it took my breath away.  I am so thankful and proud of our faculty and staff and our students.

Today we posted 3rd quarter midterm grades to Family Access in Skyward. Please review your students progress! If your student needs help, we are starting Homework Hangout in the library next week and students can stay after school Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-2:30. They can use this time as a study all or to get help from teachers. There will also be student tutors available.

Next week to beat the February blahs, Student Council is kicking off this year’s Winter Follies with a Knights spirit week.  Each day that a student participates by dressing up they get their name entered into a drawing for one of the 20 seats in the Winter Follies live audience. The spirit days are as follows:

  • Tuesday - Comfy clothes day, Wear sweats, jammie bottoms and other comfy clothes.
  • Wednesday - Mid-KNIGHT Wednesday. Paint the school black by wearing all black.
  • Thursday - Dress as a teacher day. (Teachers dress as students)
  • Friday - Knights spirit day.  Wear Knights gear and or school colors.

And one of our favorite winter traditions is our Student Council sponsored Winter Follies. This happens Friday afternoon to cap off the week.  Winter Follies is a great old fashioned talent show!  We currently have 7 acts ready to perform and can’t wait for Friday.

In extra curricular news, our girls basketball team brought home three wins!  In a varsity only match on Monday night they beat Cumberland and then on Thursday night the JV and Varsity teams won against Okaw Valley.  The Scholastic Bowl team has been competing for over a month now and this week  varsity beat Bement and Cerro Gordo!  They are having a winning season as they head into regionals in March.  On Tuesday afternoon next week they are taking on the faculty and staff! I’m not sure who to cheer for!?

Today, our FCCLA students participated in the Illinois FCCLA Section 7 Spring Rally during National FCCLA Week.  It was in a virtual format this year.  This is an annual event and we had 20 students participate.  Students learned more about FCCLA's purpose, mission, careers, and service activities. Our students were joined by other area schools in this virtual format.  It was refreshing to see our FCCLA students being able to participate in the conference.

Our Teen Safe Driving Club wanted to help all drivers out when ice and snow are covering their vehicles. Shalie Taylor, a senior, was instrumental in making sure every student and staff would receive an ice scraper with a Knight logo on it. We ordered enough for the other building staff to receive one as well.  A Clear View is the Best View! Unfortunately, this couldn’t have come at a better time with our forecast for the weekend!

Each year we invite every parent to complete the 5 Essentials Survey. This survey is anonymous and provides our faculty and administration with feedback from families on a variety of areas for our school.  We use your responses to look at areas of strength and concerns and to guide our planning for the future. Your opinion matters!  The survey takes about 10 minutes for you to complete. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and enter your email address, enter Douglas county and select Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School to begin.

There is no school on Monday for Presidents Day. Enjoy the long weekend!
