Construction Introduction
To All Residents,
With this letter, I’m introducing you to our website where we will keep you up to date about the construction of our new high school. High School Construction Project Link
Right now, you won’t find anything on this website but this introductory letter. But over time, we’ll keep adding information to keep you informed about our project. One portion of the page will be continually updated to provide information about construction. Another portion will have an ever- evolving Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. As we get questions we’ll add them plus update the FAQ as more information becomes available.
Right now, there are some things we know and other things that need more information. Let me cover what we know.
This year’s high school graduation is May 22. The next day, we will start emptying the building. Plans for that are well under way.
Asbestos removal starts May 26. If you see workers in protective suits, that’s what is happening. Our high school is safe for kids. But when things like sealed tiles are removed, some residual asbestos can become airborne so workers are protected. This work will be completed by June 5.
On June 3, we’ll have an auction to sell items from the high school that are no longer needed. This should be a fun event. We’ve been told that lots of people want some kind of keepsake from the old high school.
On June 8, demolition will begin followed immediately by the construction process.
High school students will attend the school in Lovington for the 2026-2027 school year. As I said, following this year’s graduation, we’ll move everything that is needed — library books to career training equipment — from the high school in Arthur to the building in Lovington. Items not needed for high school education, that are now in the Lovington building, will be placed in storage.
Lovington grade school kids will attend the grade school in Arthur for the 2026-2027 school year.
High school football and track and field will be held at the current facilities in Arthur. The basketball schedule includes events at the elementary schools in Arthur and in Lovington. We’ll have more information posted on our Frequently Asked Question that will soon be posted.
It is our goal — and a realistic goal — to have high school students in the new facility for the 2027-2028 school year. Moving high school to Lovington for that one year hugely speeds up the process and saves the district close $5 million dollars.
Our staff is already hard at work to ensure that every student has a great year next year. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of details to work out and we are hard at work addressing these details.
As I indicated before, please keep checking this website. As more information becomes available, it will be added. It is our goal to do our very best to keep you informed.
I hope you are as excited as I am about our new high school. It will be a challenging year. But worth every ounce of the effort.
