Bulletin Board with Date

Good morning ALAH Families,

It has been a long time since we had such a beautiful Saturday morning!  It brings a little hope to all of us.

We have had a roller coaster week inside the halls of ALAH.   It seems that every time  the State Board of Education provides us guidelines to follow, we make a plan and then the guidelines change.  This is all part of being in uncharted territory and we know everyone is doing the best they can.

Our Junior/Senior Prom has been cancelled this year.  With the anticipated social distancing rules being in place through the summer, we don’t believe it will work. Unfortunately, we have also had to cancel the senior trip this year.  All of the decisions have been difficult to come to and even harder to share.  We have gone from postponing our list of spring activities and events with the hope that they can happen to needing to say they are cancelled.  To say we are heartsick is an understatement.

Our seniors came on Friday to pick up their caps and gowns, plus a few more special items.  We are working hard at creative ways to honor our seniors and their years of hard work.

As you have heard from Superintendent Cheek, our last day of remote learning will be May 15th.  This is probably the earliest we have ever been out of school, right?  Students should still be working for their classes, but the material may be lighter as teachers are closing out their coursework.  Faculty will continue to have virtual meetings and communications through email.  Please encourage your student to finish strong this semester.

Just a reminder that your student’s grades for the second semester will be Pass or Incomplete.  Passing earns the credit for the semester.  This semester will not factor into your student’s GPA or class rank.  All incomplete work from this semester will be made up when we are allowed to return face to face.  We are hoping to have Pass/Incomplete available for you to see in Skyward next week!  We appreciate your patience with all of this.  Your student’s teachers are always willing to talk on the phone or through email if you have questions or concerns.

Next week your student will be sent an email with instructions on how to sign up for a time to come to the school to pick up their things and to return school items. We will have time slots on May 12, 13, 14 and 15. We know students have PE uniforms, band equipment, books, etc. that belong to them and that they also need to return textbooks, library books, Chromebooks, etc. (Please, start looking for those library books!) The health department and state board have very specific rules for this in order to provide a safe experience for everyone. Instructions for this will be sent to your student. We are thankful that we have the opportunity to let students in the building and will work hard to keep your student safe.

Also next week, we will be sending you a form to complete, if you want your student to keep his/her Chromebook over the summer. Please watch for this in your email.

We will still have breakfast and lunches for our families May 4th and 11th and our food pantry will still be taking orders through the month of May.  The last delivery for food pantry orders will be Friday, May 29th.

Parents of juniors … we are still waiting on information from the state board of education on how the SAT will be handled.  I can assure you as soon as we know details, we will share them with you.

Wow .. that’s a lot of information!  But I want to end with a couple of positives.  There are always behind the scenes things that happen in every organization.  Ours is no exception.  The faculty and staff have worked diligently over the past 7 weeks, many working more hours than they normally do - and that’s a lot.  We are incredibly blessed with faculty that have hearts for education, their content  and our students. They continually try to do whatever is asked of them, even when it feels impossible.  They bring energy and enthusiasm and I am thankful for every single one!

Have a great weekend.  Enjoy the sunshine.
