Weekend Update

Hello Knight Family:

Last Friday during our Homecoming games, we took time out to recognize our students that earned an Academic A. The purpose of this program is to promote, encourage and honor academic excellence at Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School. How does a student earn an Academic A?

  • Enroll in a minimum of seven academic courses each semester. This does not include summer school.

  • Freshmen and Sophomores must maintain a GPA of 3.6/4.0. for the entire academic school year.

  • Juniors and Seniors must maintain a GPA of 3.8/4.0 for the entire academic school year.

  • No D’s or F’s for the entire academic school year.

  • Seniors who graduate at the end of first semester are not eligible.

  • Transfer students must complete one semester at ALAH HS and meet all other criteria.

What is the award?  The AWARD is given on a yearly basis in the form of a certificate and a chenille letter.  Students who have already been awarded a chenille letter in a previous school year will be presented with a certificate and pin.

The students in Leadership Class are planning a week of events to bring awareness about breast cancer. In partnership with the Knights Volleyball team, we will be raising money for Mills Breast Cancer Institute and the Kara Kuhns ALAH Student Support Fund. This week of events is also meant to help our student leaders better understand what goes into planning large events. Dig Pink Week will include:

  • Tuesday is the annual Dig Pink Volleyball game.  The Knights face Arcola and we are going to fill the gym with pink!   The Leadership Class is planning a raffle with the Boosters !  We hope to see you there.

  • Wednesday night at 6 p.m. there will be a student/teacher volleyball match! Admission is $2 for players and spectators.

  • Thursday is Hat Day (Wearing a hat in school is a big deal!)  Students pay $1 so that they can wear a hat!

  • Friday is our Pink Out Football Game - watch our social media for specific details later next week.

This month our faculty is also recognizing that October is College Changes Everything Month. College is any education that you get after high school that leads to a license, certificate or degree of some kind. Further education can impact a person's potential career prospects and future salary and also change levels of poverty, life expectancy, crime and obesity rates in their communities. The month is about helping to make college accessible to anyone who wants to further their education.  We have been highlighting College Changes Everything Month, through college awareness lessons in flex time, wearing college shirts on Mondays, hosting Financial Aid Night on Oct 12 for parents/seniors and beginning next week, the Class of 2022 will be invited to a College Application Workshops for seniors during their flex period.  Also coming up on October 28th we will host a FASFA Completion Night for parents of the class of 2022.  Parents of seniors, please encourage your student to join Mrs. Hart next week during their flex period for the college application workshops.  They have an email with specific information.

This week marks the eighth week of school, meaning we half way through the first semester. Our grades are no longer done by the quarter but looked at as a whole semester.  Semester grades are determined using a rolling gradebook and a final semester exam. A rolling gradebook is cumulative for the entire semester, combining all assessments (assignments, quizzes, tests, etc) regardless of the quarter the assessment was completed. A student’s final semester grade is determined by a ratio of 80% for semester work and 20% for the final semester exam. We hope you will utilize Skyward to see your student’s progress and grades.  The end of the semester will be here before we know it.

Good luck to our Marching Knights tomorrow in Effingham and to our Cross Country team  is heading to Peoria!  No rest for our Knights!
