Dear CUSD 305 Parents, Students and Staff:
Good morning/afternoon/evening. I wanted to take a moment today to celebrate some major accomplishments of our staff and students at the high school. The results of the SAT testing for the class of 2021 have been released and the growth and accomplishments of the students and staff need to be celebrated.
As you may or may not be aware, the State of Illinois has mandated that all Juniors take the SAT exam as a part of their graduation requirement. The SAT exam is typically given in April of the students Junior year. This year’s Senior class (class of 2021) was not able to meet that requirement last year due to the pandemic and the mandatory stay at home order. In order to meet that requirement, the class of 2021 were required to complete the standardized test this school year.
The accomplishment of the students, staff and administrators at the high school needs to be celebrated. Please keep in mind that the information below was accomplished with the school year being interrupted in March and the students also coming off of the Summer months with no review of materials during that time period. That’s what makes this information and celebration so special and worthy of mentioning.
The SAT score is essentially derived from two components, an Evidence Based Reading and Writing Score and a Math Score. Those two scores combined provide the overall score for the student. I’m proud and excited to share that the class of 2021 has scored the highest score in school history since the State of Illinois enacted the mandated test. The class of 2021 achieved a combined score of 1013, which was 56 points higher than last year. This is a huge achievement considering the school year was interrupted and the Class of 2021 experienced a loss of in-person instruction and had to wait six months in between the assessment period.
Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School implemented an SAT prep class last school year that focused on providing the students targeted instruction in the areas of English and Math, which has proven to be effective in impacting the students SAT scores in a positive manner. The staff and administration at ALAH High School should be commended for their willingness to create opportunities for students that are outside the normal traditional means of instruction. The time and efforts of the SAT prep team should be recognized for their creativity and collaboration to impact our students in such a positive fashion. I couldn’t be more proud of their efforts and look forward to what is to come in the future.
Sincerely,
Mr. Shannon Cheek
Superintendent
