Hello Knight Family:
I’m starting with a heavy topic this week—one that I hope you’ll take a moment to read, learn about, and discuss with your student. In recent months, schools across the country have seen a troubling rise in online “sextortion” targeting teenagers, and we want to ensure our families have the information they need to keep their children safe. While this is a difficult topic, awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have. The link below is from Ben Tracy, a national expert on youth online safety and social media; it shares a student’s story and provides resources at the end. I encourage you to review it and use it as a starting point for an open, supportive conversation at home.
All ALAH HS students have been working on an essay for the American Legion—an annual tradition that gives us the opportunity to support our local Legions through their organization’s activities. It also provides another meaningful opportunity for students to write for a real world audience, which is exactly the kind of practice that strengthens their skills. This is what school is for, after all! This year’s topic is “What are the core American values?” Students have been discussing the prompt and drafting their essays during flex classes over the past two plus weeks. Essays are due today, and any students who still need time to finish will join me for lunch next week to continue working on them.
Another busy week next week at ALAH with NHS providing Holiday Haircuts on Monday evening, 3 home basketball games, our Christmas Concert and of course continued preparation for final exams.
