Dear Arthur CUSD #305 students and families,
We are in the fourth week of second semester and I wanted to reach out and provide a few updates on our COVID numbers, the Task Force (Facilities Update) and a brief update related to athletics and extracurriculars moving forward.
Listed below are the current numbers related to COVID.
Total number of students in the district: 1076
Number of in-person learners: 982
Number of full-time remote learners: 94
Total number of staff: 151
Number of students currently quarantined: 69
Number of students in quarantine due to positive test: 4
Number of staff in quarantine due to positive test: 2
Number of staff in quarantine due to close contact: 2
Number of positive in-person student cases (since the start of school): 61
Number of known positive staff cases (since the start of school): 18
As the numbers continue to trend in a positive direction statewide, I’m proud to mention again that our staff, students, parents and community need to be commended for their efforts. Through the cooperation of all parties mentioned we continue to be able to provide in-person learning for the majority of our students and for that we are very grateful.
I also wanted to encourage you to visit our website and click on the CUSD 305 Facilities Planning link that is located both at the top of the district website and or in the menu section. The information provided dates back to last year when the district began to engage in a facilities study that would help design and develop a long term strategic plan for facilities. Currently this year, we have formed a Task Force that consists of Administrators, Board of Education members, teachers, parents and community members. The Task Force has started to discuss our facilities and soon will be assisting in the design and direction of taking that information and including a larger scope of individuals within the community. We are excited to continue the process and the links on the website will be updated regularly. The district website is www.cusd305.org. I hope the information that is posted there is informative.
I don’t have a lot of information to necessarily share related to extracurriculars but did want to share what we currently know as of today. Many of you probably already know this, but we have been moved into Phase 4 which would allow us the opportunity to begin to participate in many of the extracurricular activities we offer. Mr. Seal has been working diligently to put together schedules, hire officials, organize practices and interpret guidelines that are being put forth by the IDPH. This is no small task and I commend Mr. Seal for his efforts and hardwork to provide our students and student athletes with the opportunities they deserve. We will continue to communicate those guidelines that are set forth once they have been officially established. In addition to the IDPH guidelines that need to be properly interpreted and implemented, the IHSA and the IESA are also communicating their recommendations for a safe return to play scenario. All of those guidelines have not been clearly communicated as of today. Once that information has been gathered, we will communicate moving forward. Your patience is appreciated during that process.
Finally, I want to once again thank all involved for a successful first semester and a great start to the second semester. Without all of us working together and demonstrating patience, grace and trust we would have never been able to accomplish what we have this school year. Thanks for everything and Go Knights! Have a great rest of the week.
Sincerely,
Shannon Cheek

It’s been mentioned before but is certainly worth mentioning again and that is how proud I am of everyone involved in making this semester possible. All of us have been asked to demonstrate a unique and increased level of flexibility, adaptability, cooperation, patience, grace, collaboration and compassion for others. Things haven’t always been smooth and there have been bumps in the road, but the level of support, cooperation and positivity that has been demonstrated has made those difficult transitions easier to navigate.
We are going to continue with the same schedule for the second semester until at least the end of February. We will be meeting with the Administration, Remote Learning Team as well as other leadership within the district throughout the months of January and February to determine if any changes will be made past the end of February. We will continue to communicate any changes and will do our best to keep everyone informed moving forward. We appreciate your patience and continued flexibility as the pandemic has forced us to occasionally create modifications that require all of us to adapt and create changes in our schedules.
I will close with a final extension of thanks and gratitude to all of you. It’s been a trying but also gratifying semester and I look forward to what next semester will bring. Although we cannot predict what that will look like I’m confident that with the dedication that the students, staff and communities continue to provide we will be able to overcome the obstacles that we may face. Thank you for a great semester and I hope you and your loved ones enjoy this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Shannon Cheek
